Chantilly is a town north of Paris in the Oise department, surrounded by extensive forests and closely associated with the Château de Chantilly. The château complex combines a grand Renaissance-style palace, the Petit Château, formal gardens, waterways, and the Great Stables, creating a distinctive cultural landscape. Chantilly's forest is crossed by walking and riding paths, while the town itself contains elegant streets, historic buildings, and areas of open parkland. Its location between Paris and the wider Oise countryside makes it both a historic destination and a centre for equestrian traditions.

Chantilly's heritage is closely connected with the powerful families who owned the estate, particularly the Princes of Condé and the Duc d'Aumale. The château houses an important collection of paintings and manuscripts assembled by the Duc d'Aumale, while the Great Stables reflect the longstanding importance of horses to the estate. Chantilly lace, once an important local craft, became internationally recognised for its delicate patterns, although much of the lace associated with the name was produced elsewhere. The town's cultural identity also includes a strong equestrian tradition, supported by training facilities, racing, and the Musée du Cheval.

The Château de Chantilly is the area's principal attraction, with its art collections, formal French gardens, English-style garden, and Grand Canal. The Great Stables contain the Horse Museum and provide demonstrations that explore equestrian traditions. Beyond the estate, Chantilly Forest offers extensive woodland and paths, while the nearby Étangs de Commelles form a group of ponds surrounded by trees and open countryside. The town's proximity to the Parc Naturel Régional Oise-Pays de France provides access to further forests, villages, abbeys, and historic estates, including the former royal abbey at Royaumont.

Chantilly is particularly known for crème Chantilly, sweetened whipped cream traditionally associated with the town and frequently served with desserts. The area is also part of the wider culinary landscape of northern France, where cheeses, pastries, mushrooms, and seasonal produce are common. The town's equestrian culture remains especially distinctive, with thoroughbred training and horse racing forming an important part of local life. The Hippodrome de Chantilly lies beside the château estate, while the Great Stables provide a direct connection between the town's aristocratic heritage and its continuing role as a centre for horse breeding, training, and performance.
