Pogradec is a lakeside town in southeastern Albania, situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Ohrid beneath the surrounding mountains. The lake is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property known as the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region and is recognized for its exceptional freshwater biodiversity. Pogradec's waterfront includes a long promenade, beaches, restaurants, and areas for swimming and boating. The town is also close to villages and natural sites along the lake, making it a useful base for exploring the wider Pogradec basin and the Albanian side of Lake Ohrid.

Pogradec has a strong literary and cultural identity, with writers and poets such as Lasgush Poradeci and Mitrush Kuteli closely associated with the town. The old Pogradec Castle stands on a hill above the town, where archaeological remains reveal successive settlements and fortifications. Nearby Lin is known for its archaeological heritage and an early Christian church with preserved mosaic floors. Traditional clothing, music, fishing, and food customs form part of the region's cultural heritage. Villages around the lake, including Tushemisht, retain stone houses, churches, agricultural traditions, and local practices connected with life beside the water.

Lake Ohrid is the main natural feature around Pogradec, with deep, clear waters supporting many endemic species, including the highly valued koran trout. About five kilometers east of the town, Drilon is a protected natural area formed around karst springs that feed the Drilon River. Its waterways, wooden bridges, vegetation, and birdlife create a different landscape from the open lake shore. The nearby Tushemisht village provides access to the Drilon area, while hiking routes lead into the surrounding mountains. The Lin Peninsula and the archaeological site of Selca e Poshtme add important cultural attractions to the wider area.

Fish is central to Pogradec's cuisine, particularly koran, a local trout from Lake Ohrid that appears in dishes such as baked or casserole-style preparations. Other traditional lake fish include trout, carp, belushka, and eel. Regional cooking also features corn bread, lakror, petanik, pancakes, preserves, pickles, and sweets such as baklava and oshmare. Food preparation has traditionally included preserving fruit and vegetables for the colder months, with homemade wine and brandy also produced in the area. Pogradec's food culture therefore reflects both the resources of Lake Ohrid and the agricultural traditions of the surrounding villages.
