Ballena Bay is a coastal community in southern Costa Rica's Puntarenas Province, located along the Pacific coast near Uvita. The area is closely associated with Marino Ballena National Park, a protected marine and coastal landscape extending along about 15 kilometers of shoreline. Ballena Bay is surrounded by tropical forest, sandy beaches, rocky shores, mangroves, and offshore formations. The community developed alongside fishing and coastal activities, while conservation has become an important part of the area's identity. Its position between the Pacific Ocean and the forested hills of the Osa region gives the landscape a strong connection between land and sea.

Local life in Ballena Bay has long been connected to the ocean, particularly through small-scale fishing and the use of coastal resources. Community members from Ballena Bay and nearby Piñuelas played an important role in supporting the creation of Marino Ballena National Park to protect marine resources and coastal ecosystems. The surrounding region reflects Costa Rica's Pacific coastal culture, where fishing, farming, family businesses, and tourism contribute to community life. Nearby Uvita and other coastal settlements also form part of the local network of communities connected to the national park and its marine environment.

Marino Ballena National Park is the area's main attraction and protects marine waters, beaches, mangroves, coral reefs, rocky formations, and forest. One of its best-known features is the Uvita Tombolo, commonly called the Whale Tail, a naturally formed rocky and sandy structure visible most clearly at low tide. Offshore, Ballena Island and the Tres Hermanas rock formations provide habitat for marine life and nesting birds. The park's waters support humpback whales, spotted and bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, parrotfish, and other species, while snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and whale watching are among the activities available.

Seafood is an important part of the cuisine around Ballena Bay, with fish and other Pacific marine products appearing in local restaurants and family-run establishments. Costa Rican staples such as gallo pinto, casado, ceviche, plantains, and fresh fruit are also common. A distinctive feature of the area is the seasonal presence of humpback whales, with different populations passing through Costa Rican waters during separate parts of the year. The combination of a fishing community, protected coastline, offshore reefs, mangroves, and the unusual Whale Tail formation gives Ballena Bay a close relationship with the marine environment.
