Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya’s largest protected areas, covering about 13,747 square kilometres in the country’s southeast. Its landscape is largely semi-arid, with open plains, scrub, rocky outcrops, and river corridors shaped by the Tsavo, Athi, Galana, and Voi rivers. The park is particularly associated with its dust-red elephants, whose appearance comes from the animals coating themselves in the park’s distinctive red soil. Its scale also allows large areas of wilderness to remain relatively open, creating a setting where wildlife and the surrounding landscape are closely connected.

Tsavo East has a strong place in Kenya’s conservation history and is part of the larger Tsavo Conservation Area. The park is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service, with wildlife protection supported by ranger operations and habitat management. Its wildlife includes elephants, black rhinos, lions, leopards, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, lesser kudu, gerenuk, and the endangered hirola. Birdlife is equally significant, with more than 500 species recorded. The park’s conservation work is especially important for maintaining large habitats where wide-ranging animals can move between water sources and feeding areas.

Several landmarks give Tsavo East its distinctive physical character. The Yatta Plateau, described by the Kenya Wildlife Service as the world’s longest lava flow, forms a long volcanic ridge along part of the park. Mudanda Rock rises above a natural dam and is a useful wildlife-viewing point, particularly when animals gather around water. Lugard’s Falls consists of eroded rock formations and rapids along the Galana River rather than a conventional waterfall. Aruba Dam, on the Voi River, is another important water source that attracts elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and numerous water birds.

Tsavo East is best known for wildlife viewing, but its environment also supports a wide range of bird species and plant communities adapted to dry conditions. The Galana River creates a greener corridor through parts of the otherwise arid landscape, while doum palms and acacia scrub occur around riverine areas. Game drives are the main way to explore the park, with guided walks and photographic experiences also available in suitable areas. Its proximity to Kenya’s coast makes Tsavo East an important inland wildlife destination for travelers combining safari landscapes with time around Mombasa, Malindi, or other coastal areas.

Taita Hills
Taita Hills
Taita Hills rise above the dry plains of southeastern Kenya in Taita-Taveta County, forming a mountainous landscape between the Tsavo plains and the coastal region. The hills are part of the northern Eastern Arc Mountains and include steep slopes, cultivated valleys, and remaining patches of indigenous forest. Their cooler and wetter conditions contrast with the surrounding semi-arid lowlands, creating a range of habitats within a relatively small area.
