Eigg is a small island in the Inner Hebrides, lying south of Skye and forming one of the four Small Isles. About five miles long and three miles wide, it combines a compact crofting landscape with beaches, moorland, woodland, cliffs, and volcanic formations. The island is community owned through the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, following a community buyout that placed its future under local control. Most visitors arrive by ferry, and the absence of regular public transport encourages exploration on foot or by bicycle. Galmisdale Bay contains the main pier and several visitor facilities.

Eigg has a long cultural history, with evidence of human settlement extending back thousands of years. Gaelic and Norse influences are reflected in many island place names, while archaeological remains include ancient forts, burial sites, early Christian crosses, and abandoned crofting settlements. Kildonnan contains the remains of an early Christian chapel and graveyard associated with St Donnan. The Cleadale Crofting Museum illustrates traditional agricultural life, while local concerts, ceilidhs, craft workshops, and music sessions remain part of community life. The island’s community ownership is another important part of its modern identity.

An Sgùrr is Eigg’s most recognizable natural landmark, a long ridge of dark pitchstone rising prominently above the island. Walking routes lead toward its summit and provide views across Eigg and neighboring Rum. Laig Bay has a broad Atlantic beach facing the Cuillin mountains of Rum, while the nearby Singing Sands are known for the squeaking sound produced when dry quartz grains are walked across. Eigg’s varied habitats support golden eagles, hen harriers, Manx shearwaters, black guillemots, and many other birds. Coastal walks, kayaking, cycling, and guided wildlife excursions provide additional ways to explore the island.

Food on Eigg is supplied through a combination of local production and mainland deliveries, with the community shop, cafés, and small businesses serving residents and visitors. Local products include island-grown vegetables, eggs, baked goods, and beer made by the island brewery. Sustainability is a particularly distinctive aspect of Eigg life: its community-owned electricity system combines wind, hydro, and solar generation to supply the island. The project has become an important example of community-scale renewable energy. This practical approach to local ownership, food production, transport, and energy is closely connected with the island’s modern character.
