Barcelona is the capital of Anzoátegui state in northeastern Venezuela, situated a short distance inland from the Caribbean coast and connected closely with neighboring Puerto La Cruz. Together, the two cities form one of the main urban areas of eastern Venezuela and serve as commercial and transportation centers for the surrounding region. Barcelona lies near the Neverí River and provides access to beaches, offshore islands, and the coastal landscapes of the Caribbean. Its urban character combines historic churches and plazas with residential districts, markets, and modern development extending toward the coast.

Barcelona’s identity reflects Indigenous, Spanish colonial, Caribbean, and eastern Venezuelan traditions. Its historic center contains several important religious buildings, including the Catedral de San Cristóbal, which faces Plaza Boyacá. The Museo de Anzoátegui preserves objects and exhibits related to regional history and culture. Another notable landmark is the Casa Fuerte, a former religious building remembered for its role in Venezuela’s struggle for independence.

The city serves as a practical base for exploring the Caribbean environments surrounding the metropolitan area. Nearby Puerto La Cruz is a departure point for excursions into Mochima National Park, a protected landscape of islands, sheltered bays, beaches, mountains, and marine habitats extending along the coast of Anzoátegui and Sucre. Closer to Barcelona, the Neverí River crosses the city before reaching the Caribbean. The surrounding coastal region supports dolphins, seabirds, coral communities, and numerous fish species, while dry hills and greener mountain slopes create varied scenery along the shoreline.

Ciudad Guayana
As you cruise along the Orinoco, South America's second-longest river, you will pass an imposing 17th-century fort. Just up the river is Ciudad Guayana, your gateway to Angel Falls. The falls, discovered 60 years ago by American bush pilot Jimmy Angel, are the hightest in the world. More than a half-mile hight and 15 times taller than Niagara Falls, they are undoubtedly one of the world's most breathtaking natural wonders.
