Dundee sits on the north bank of the River Tay in eastern Scotland, with the city centre rising behind a broad waterfront. Scotland’s first UNESCO City of Design, it is known for a long tradition of making and creative work, from textiles and publishing to comics and video games. The River Tay remains central to the city’s appearance and identity, crossed by the Tay Road Bridge and Tay Rail Bridge. Redevelopment of former dockland has also reshaped the waterfront, placing major cultural institutions beside spaces that reflect Dundee’s maritime and industrial connections.

Dundee’s identity is closely tied to jute, shipbuilding and publishing. Verdant Works, a restored former jute mill, explains the textile industry and the lives of the people who worked in it. The city also has an important place in Scottish popular culture through DC Thomson, publisher of The Beano and home to characters such as Dennis the Menace and the Bash Street Kids. Dundee later became associated with computer game development, including the creation of Lemmings and the original Grand Theft Auto, adding digital design to its established tradition of creative industries.

Dundee is associated with several distinctive foods, most notably Dundee cake, a fruit cake traditionally topped with whole almonds. The city also has a strong connection with orange marmalade through the Keiller family, whose confectionery business helped establish the product on a commercial scale. These foods form part of a wider local story often summarized through Dundee’s traditional “three Js”: jute, jam and journalism. The phrase reflects industries that shaped generations of local employment, while today’s museums, publishing companies and design businesses show how parts of that working heritage remain visible across the city.
