João Pessoa is the capital of Paraíba on Brazil’s northeastern coast, with an urban landscape that extends from the historic center to a long Atlantic waterfront. Its beaches include Tambaú, Manaíra, Cabo Branco, and Bessa, while the Sanhauá River borders the older part of the city. João Pessoa is also known for its abundant public greenery, including parks, tree-lined areas, and the Jardim Botânico Benjamim Maranhão. The waterfront is an important part of daily life, with promenades, cycling paths, restaurants, and access to beaches and marine excursions.

The city’s cultural identity is rooted in Paraíba’s religious traditions, regional arts, and historic architecture. In the old center, the Centro Cultural São Francisco contains the Church and Convent of São Francisco, noted for its Baroque decoration, carved woodwork, and extensive tilework. Other landmarks include the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Teatro Santa Roza, and Hotel Globo, which overlooks the Sanhauá River. Local craft traditions include lacework, woven textiles, ceramics, and other handmade products that reflect the artistic traditions of northeastern Brazil.

João Pessoa’s coastal attractions extend beyond its beaches. At the easternmost point of the Americas, Ponta do Seixas marks the place where the coastline reaches farthest east on the continent, with the Cabo Branco Lighthouse nearby. During suitable tides, boats travel to the natural pools of Picãozinho and Seixas, where shallow reef formations create areas for swimming and observing marine life. Inland, the Jardim Botânico Benjamim Maranhão protects a large area of Atlantic Forest and contains trails through native vegetation, offering an important preserved landscape within the city.

Paraíba’s regional cuisine is well represented in João Pessoa, combining seafood with ingredients associated with the interior of the state. Rubacão is a local favorite made with rice, beans, cheese, and usually dried meat, while carne de sol, queijo de coalho, cassava, and corn appear in many regional dishes. Seafood restaurants commonly serve fish, shrimp, crab, and moquecas. João Pessoa is also known for its tapioca, a cassava-based specialty that can be filled with either savory or sweet ingredients. Local markets provide another way to encounter regional foods, sweets, spices, and handicrafts.
