While an earthquake in 1972 left few buildings intact in downtown Managua, new areas are building up. Managua has excellent restaurants, nice hotels, and is a good base for day tours into the countryside.

Ometepe
Ometepe is an island in southwestern Nicaragua, located in Lake Nicaragua and formed by two volcanoes joined by a narrow isthmus. Concepción rises on the northern side of the island, while Maderas occupies the southern section. The island includes the municipalities of Moyogalpa and Altagracia and has a landscape of farms, forests, wetlands, beaches, and rural communities.
