Nanyuki, located on the equator in central Kenya, is a lively town that serves as a gateway to Mount Kenya and the Laikipia Plateau. Founded by British settlers in the early 20th century, it still carries traces of its colonial past while embodying the energy and diversity of modern Kenya. The town’s position, set against the backdrop of Africa’s second-highest peak, makes it a crossroads for adventurers, conservationists, and travelers heading into Kenya’s highlands and wildlife reserves.

The landscapes surrounding Nanyuki are among the most varied in the country. To the east rise the forested slopes and glacial peaks of Mount Kenya National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to elephants, buffalo, and rare mountain antelope. To the west stretch the open savannas and conservancies of Laikipia, known for pioneering wildlife conservation projects that protect rhinos, lions, and endangered species like the Grevy’s zebra. This blend of mountain and savanna ecosystems makes Nanyuki a hub for both eco-tourism and adventure.

In town, Nanyuki has a relaxed yet cosmopolitan atmosphere. Cafés, markets, and craft shops serve locals and travelers alike, while the nearby equator line marker is a popular stop for photos and demonstrations of the Coriolis effect.
