León, Nicaragua serves as the country’s capital for more than two centuries and still feels like the intellectual and political heart of Nicaragua. The city is known for its revolutionary past, visible in murals that stretch across building walls, telling stories of resistance, poets, and everyday citizens. The Cathedral of León, the largest in Central America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dominates the central square.

Ometepe is an island in southwestern Nicaragua, located in Lake Nicaragua and formed by two volcanoes joined by a narrow isthmus. Concepción rises on the northern side of the island, while Maderas occupies the southern section. The island includes the municipalities of Moyogalpa and Altagracia and has a landscape of farms, forests, wetlands, beaches, and rural communities.

San Juan del Sur is a coastal town on Nicaragua's southwestern Pacific shore, set around a curved bay bordered by hills. Its waterfront combines a working fishing community with restaurants, small hotels, shops, and a broad sandy beach. The surrounding coastline includes forested headlands, rocky coves, and additional beaches reached by road or boat.

Granada, Nicaragua, founded in 1524, is one of the oldest European-established cities on the mainland of the Americas where visitors can explore cobblestone streets lined with brightly painted facades. The mustard-yellow Granada Cathedral dominates the central park and provides an easy reference point for those navigating the city on foot or by traditional horse-drawn carriage.

While an earthquake in 1972 left few buildings intact in downtown Managua, new areas are building up. Managua has excellent restaurants, nice hotels, and is a good base for day tours into the countryside.

Corn Islands are a small Caribbean archipelago off Nicaragua's southeastern coast, made up of Great Corn Island and Little Corn Island. The islands are surrounded by clear Caribbean waters, coral reefs, sandy beaches, and tropical vegetation.

Popoyo is a small coastal community on Nicaragua's southwestern Pacific coast, in the department of Rivas. It is known for its broad sandy shoreline, rocky coastal points, and consistent Pacific surf. The surrounding landscape remains largely rural, with pastureland, farms, tropical vegetation, and small settlements extending inland from the beach.
